DePIN first time I have heard that term. thanks. I purchased two HNT miners and it took them 6months to land back in the last frenzy. They do their thing and my goal is to stack as many coins on chain anywhere I can.
For Helium see comment above. DIMO earns me ~$100 a month (after having it connected for months and increasing reputation/earnings). Grass is just points rn so tbd. Hivemapper I don’t personally have and it can vary a lot based on where you live and your driving habits but I’ve heard as high as $100 a week in some cases. The goal with these is to buy one piece of hardware or experiment in a low-cost way if you’re intrigued by the project, to then see if you want to get more deeply involved.
I've been running a Saga (Solana) phone for a few months. If you can get your hands one one, it's super easy. Probably get about 700-800 $mobile per day, which is more than enough to pay for the Helium monthly cell service. Saga phones are sold out, but you can either find on secondary markets or wait for v2 to come out later next year.
Right now, the indoor WiFi hotspot is likely best bang for buck. $250, super easy to set up, and can earn $150 a day in 100x boosted hexes (Miami only rn). More like $2 a day in non boosted hexes
I appreciate the reply, but I should have been clearer as to my level of understanding.
When you click your link, it lists companies you can purchase from.
Do you suggest an “IOT” device or a “Mobile” device?
And if so, have you had success with one of these company’s products (EDATEC looks like the one in the photo; Finestra is the exact price you mentioned; FXTec Linxdot much cheaper than you suggested; Kerlink; ResIOT; SmartHarvest)
Sorry to sound like an imbecile, but in this area I am.
No worries at all. IoT devices don’t earn much these days. I’d go for Mobile devices, specifically the indoor WiFi hotspot for $250. It’s a cheap way to get your foot in the door, learn how the service, app, and wallet/earnings work.
I remember being interested by Helium about two years ago but was put off by people saying they were not able to mine enough to get back the price of the hardware.
Has the situation changed on this issue? (I'm guessing it's very location dependant)
See my comment above but that’s 100% true for Helium’s IoT network. There’s enough coverage in most populated areas so your node isn’t doing much and therefore shouldn’t receive much in terms of rewards. For helium’s new cellular/wifi network, they need more coverage so are incentivizing that. Some areas in Miami (their pilot city) have 100x earnings and can pay $150 a day for a $250 piece of hardware.
Yes their Helium Mobile MVNO provides service to the US only (via partnership with T Mobile). But they just announced a pilot with Telefonica in Mexico. Helium hotspots can be deployed there to create coverage, earn tokens, and Telefonica will try to have its customers roam onto that coverage
I live in China (Shanghai) that has a pretty strong negative stance on crypto. Is it still possible and profitable to get involved in DePIN? Any recommendations which project?
Gm, thanks. Not financial or legal advice, maybe try Grass for starters (link in “Unequal Results” section of stack). It’s free, easy to download, and completely passive. Not sure if it will work in your country but you can try
Thanks for the rundown and resources, Connor. Been mining grass and the effortlessness is great.
Curious if you (or anyone else in the jungle) has a recommendation for possible mining opportunities with a now-retired desktop computer (that's still got decent processor, RAM).
Less familiar with the DRN (digital resource network) subsector of DePIN but potentially some compute/storage type projects like Render, Akash, Bittensor, filecoin, arweave etc. there may be an aggregator like hivello or software that can easily check your computer’s specs and get you mining compatibility info.
Thanks for providing all that great info! I'm interested in multi-account farming so I bought some Germany residential proxies and setup AdsPower to farm GRASS. Unfortunately there is a device connection loss to the GRASS servers. It must not like those Germany residential proxies (they have been confirmed to connect and work). Not sure what else to try other than different residential proxies from another country. Or maybe this setup wont work with GRASS since its essentially setting up its own proxy network.
Any estimates on payoff for having the Grass extension online for a month?
Not yet as it’s just points currently but with how easy and passive it is it’s pure asymmetric upside essentially. Token soon
Hard to tell as the tokenomics haven't been released to my knowledge. I remember seeing rumors that it might be like $30/mo
It's completely passive so worth doing on the machine you're not using for crypto, or a spare old android phone.
Cool.
Hopefully turns into a token and a little pump
not that I know of for Grass. Usually something like whales.market doesn't drop for points until the airdrop is announced.
cool thnx
Also lol did the jungle crash Grass?
No, they're performing a server upgrade (info on their Discord)

Hi Connor, thanks for the time & sharing learning with the bowtied community here.
For the Depins you mentioned, any rough sense how much each one could earn per month?
Absolutely. Thanks for reading.

Appreciate it. 👍
Amazing. Didn't even know about this sector. Like BTB says, focus on one specific area. Cannot focus on them all.
I got you
Is there a specific hardware for the Helium that you recommend?

Unfortunately, seems the cellular network is US only (rest of the world is blank).

Great writeup.

I'll look into it and report back with my findings. Thanks for the starting point!

If you want to run Grass (getgrass.io) on an Amazon AWS server: that's not working. It only works on private computers as confirmed by support.
Any reason ICP is not on this list.
easily the biggest and most technologically innovative depin right?
