That's exactly what happened to me as a musician. If you have talent you will find it in the firsts two weeks of picking up an instrument at any age. People will tell you randomly. Younger the better of course.

Great post! Thanks

Damn... not having a dad around to tell you what to do vs. what not to do really does set you back. Wasted many yrs. trying everything before I figured things out with Bull.

Is what it is, on long enough time frame you figure it out

Loved the post - eye opening take about the onset of puberty and long-term effects on development. Here to also say that a paid post on telomeres and aging would be super interesting

Interesting comment about Middle Eastern and Persian people. However I think a lot don’t go to the olympics because it’s not something the countries prioritise in their funding in the same way others do. Many are in extreme poverty. Most of the Middle Eastern countries tend to invest in cricket. Other than that agreed on this post. But that seemed like a bit of reach.

Expand full comment

They would be prioritizing it if they were naturally good at it

Jamaica is poor but every kid runs sprints then the best ones Rise to the top. Kenya is poor but everyone runs long distance, etc.

If the Middle East had a sport they were good at, the UAE, Kuwait, etc would all be pouring all their money to develop the kids and win medals

Yup

Fair point with Jamaica, Kenya etc. However there are many undiscovered boxing talents in Pakistan for instance. Money is only just starting to be put there. Country economy definitely makes a difference and reduces chances for young talent. For instance take China, they dominate weightlifting now, but before, they didn’t. A lot of that is due to having money to pour into sports. Also genetics are a big play, but Russia and US dominated before. Genetics are a huge part but funding really can’t be overlooked in that part of the world

In big money industries, money flows to where the talent is. China is an outlier as they literally develop kids from birth (many lose their spots when they stop developing) but resources will flow to identify top talent. Are we missing some kid who was born on a mountain and could’ve been a great tennis player if he had access to a court? Sure. But in general the market is efficient at looking for top talent since there’s so much money to be made. We’re seeing it in UFC now. If places are found to be teeming with kids with potential, it’s only a matter of time until the money flows in since the ROI is insane

You are a smart dude and don't suffer from cope. All the "caveman sports" like who can run fastest or jump highest are largely found. Too easy to spot and pull them in.

Agree the extremely technical sports with high cost of participation for top training (golf/tennis) more wiggle room but over the long-term anything low economic barrier to entry you're seeing the best of the best.

yup. that persian genotype looks too much like pull rabbit outta ass arg. from training culture, to socioeconomics, to just too much social variables to cleanup... now, a big enough sample where the ethnic group can be isolated given the same base, say a big american city.....

but anyways, GO Jamaica Bobsleigh Team!! :P

It's usually pretty easy to get info for the past couple of generations, especially about employment, even if those people are no longer available/around. Death certificates, obituaries, census records, marriage announcements, etc. Everyone has a paper trail.

For sure, sadly most don't bother

Big track and field geek here. Watching the world championships and trying to apply this lens to predict the “future” stars of different events. There is one athlete that got my attention in the sprints - Oblique Seville. Looks very young! I’m thinking you are in to something here.

Here is a middle eastern! It's true that middle eastern hit puberty earlier than others. I remember in high school I used to shave my beard since it has grown. And really I have not been good at football or any other sport ball tbh. + Middle eastern age like sh*t from health aspects and even their skin gets burnt a lot by our sun. Anyhow, my body type is mesomorph, and tend to be good at strength training more than endurance. However, I've always been told to be great at Math and how to deal/understand people. And that's the path I have gone through. Genetics are real. Understand your nature. To have better odds at success once you double down on yourself.

Late reading this but awesome post, would you say the sales gene is genetic as well. both sides of my grandparents are from europe and were in sales there and now my dad was and so is me and my two brothers. All very good at it too so very curious how that trait is passed down
